The Advocacy Committee, Bruins Public Health's newest committee, focuses on disseminating information about public health-related issues in the Los Angeles region, as well as national and international topics. Through co-sponsoring public health-related bills, creating proclamations with Los Angeles County, conducting literature reviews and writing white papers, holding advocacy events in partnership with local and county organizations, and lobbying events at the local and state-level, we are committed to advocating for historically underserved and underrepresented communities.
Beginning in Fall Quarter, Advocacy Committee members will identify public health-related topics they are interested in and work with members holding the same interests on producing policy briefs, advocacy, and lobbying events related to the topic they choose. The work that Advocacy Committee members produce has the opportunity to be published in journals and presented at various conferences and events.
CURRENT PARTNERSHIPS
PUBLIC HEALTH ADVOCACY DAY
On April 13th, several of our BPH Advocacy members were able to travel to Sacramento for Public Health Advocacy Day! At the capitol, BPH Advocacy met with several senators and assemblymembers to discuss and lobby for bills that are influential to the world of public health and support historically underrepresented & underserved communities. Some of topics advocated for by these bills included illegal firearm files, CalAIM's housing and nutrition efforts, and uniting California's various food security assistance programs. BILL INFOGRAPHICS
Over the past year, the Advocacy Committee divided into project groups to research and lobby for public health policies that greatly impact UCLA students and the greater LA community. In order to promote these bills, each team created an educational infographic on topics ranging from maternal health, health insurance, gun violence, to community health.
